Some pieces can’t be replaced.

A great-grandmother’s china cabinet, a desk from the family home, a chair that has been at the table for decades. Time, moves, and everyday life leave their mark: the finish dulls, veneer lifts, joints loosen, and fabric wears through.

The goal isn’t to make an old piece look brand new. It’s to repair what is damaged and keep what makes it worth keeping. We’ll talk through the right approach before we start.

Protecting Your Piece

Restore, Repair, or Leave It Alone?

Not every antique needs a full refinish. Here is how to think it through, and how we will talk it through with you.

  • Least invasive

    Keep the original finish

If the original finish is mostly intact and the piece is just dull, dirty, or lightly marked, its age and patina are often part of what makes it worth keeping. In general, the less you strip away, the more of the piece you keep.

  • Targeted fix

    Repair and blend

If the damage is in one place, like a loose joint, a crack, a chip, or lifted veneer, a targeted repair that matches the surrounding finish is usually gentler than stripping the whole piece.

  • Full restoration

    Refinish completely

If the finish is failing beyond saving, the wood is water-damaged or sun-faded, or you want a different look, a full refinish can be the right call. We strip the old finish, sand to bare wood, repair damage, and apply the stain or color you want.

Worried about value? If you think a piece may be worth real money, an independent antiques appraiser is the right person to put a number on it and say whether the original finish matters. Then send us photos and we will talk through your options before we start.

Quick Answers

Antique Furniture Restoration: Frequently Asked Questions

Do you work on antique furniture?

We do. Older and sentimental pieces are some of our favorite work, and we treat them with extra care. Send us photos and tell us what is wrong with your piece, and we will let you know what it needs.

Can you refinish antique furniture without ruining its value?

Yes. We take extra care with antiques and heirloom pieces, and we will talk through the right approach before we start. Whether refinishing helps or hurts a piece’s value depends on the piece, so if you think yours may be worth real money, have an independent appraiser look at it first and tell us what you learn.

Should I refinish my antique or leave the original finish alone?

It depends on the condition of the finish and what the piece means to you. If the original finish is mostly intact, a careful repair is often gentler than stripping it. If the finish is failing, water-damaged, or sun-faded, a full refinish can bring the wood back. Send photos and we will talk through which one fits your piece.

What kinds of antique damage can you repair?

We repair scratches, dents, cracks, loose joints, and worn finishes, and we can address upholstery wear on older chairs and sofas. For furniture damaged by a flood, a pipe burst, or another water-related incident, we are also capable of crafting missing or severely damaged pieces and then completely refinishing. What is realistic depends on the piece, so send photos for a free estimate.

Can you match the original finish and materials?

Matching is the goal on every repair: the fix should blend into the rest of the piece. How close we can get depends on the wood, the age of the finish, and how much of it has to be touched. We will tell you what is realistic once we see your photos.

How do I get a free estimate for an antique from photos?

Tap Get a Free Photo Estimate or call (346) 236-0880, tell us about your piece, and send photos: the whole piece, close-ups of the damage, any label, stamp, or maker’s mark along with the underside, and one with a tape measure beside it for size. We will let you know what it will take, with no obligation.

How much does antique furniture restoration cost?

It depends on the piece, the kind of damage, and the condition of the finish, which is why we offer a free estimate. Send us photos or give us a call and we will give you an honest answer.

How long does it take to restore an antique?

It depends on the size and difficulty of the project. Our refinishing projects usually take between 1-2 weeks, and we will give you a clear timeline along with your free estimate.

Do you offer a warranty on antique restoration?

Yes. We offer a 1 year warranty on all of our repairs and finishes.

How should I care for an antique between repairs?

Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from heat vents and radiators, because wood moves with changes in heat and humidity. Dust with a soft, dry cloth, wipe up spills right away, and use coasters and pads. Silicone sprays and harsh cleaners can build up on an old finish, so go gentle. This is general care advice, not instructions for a specific piece. If you are unsure what yours needs, send us photos.
